God of War II is an action-adventure game with elements of hack and slash. It’s a single-player third-person video game with a fixed camera perspective.
The player controls Kratos in combo-based combat, platforming, and puzzle game elements, and battles Greek mythological foes such as harpies, minotaurs, Gorgons, griffins, cyclopes, cerberuses, Sirens, satyrs, and nymphs.
Undead legionnaires, ravens, undead barbarians, beast lords, rabid hounds, wild boars, and the army of the Fates, including sentries, guardians, juggernauts, and high priests, were all created specifically for the game
. Many of the combo attacks from God of War return, and the game includes more than twice as many boss fights and more difficult puzzles than the original.
To progress through sections of the game, the player must climb walls and ladders, jump across chasms, swing on ropes, and balance across beams.
Some puzzles are simple, such as moving a box so that the player can use it as a jumping-off point to access a pathway that is inaccessible through normal jumping, while others are more complex, such as finding several items scattered throughout the game to unlock one door.
