How does RDP licensing work?

All client devices must have a Remote Desktop Service Client Access License (RDS CAL) to access server resources. The server determines if the client needs an RDS CAL when the client devices connect to it via the RDP protocol.

The server then makes a CAL request on behalf of the client device connecting to the RDSH to the Remote Desktop License Server. The connection is then activated after the client device receives the correct CAL from the licensing server.

The RD licensing service installs and maintains these CALs on the RD license server.

There needs to be at least one RD license server in the network, regardless of the size of your RDS deployment. The license service and RDSH can both be located on the same server for small networks.

Large deployments, however, necessitate their installation on distinct servers.
