Some years ago, you could probably go a whole day, or days even, without charging your phone. Even though some of the newfound technologies and apps were not available then, it was bliss to not have to put your phone on charge every 10 or so hours.

One of the reasons those batteries used to last so was the make of the batteries. Those models had a NiMH cell phone battery. It was later replaced by the Lithium-Ion batteries we use today since Lithium-Ion are quicker to charge.

The only downside is, they don’t last so long. Especially with the advancement of many apps to make our phones more useful (but draining your battery in the process).

iPhones also use lithium-ion batteries. Due to work and other activities, you probably want a full battery every morning and may have been leaving your phone on charge overnight.

Is it OK to leave your iPhone charging overnight?

It is quite notable that, there has never been an iPhone with a NiMH battery. Charging your iPhone is overnight is a bad idea. Consider the following reasons.

Li-Ion batteries generate a lot of heat and in some instances can catch fire. Consider the case of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 battery where they had to recall the phone back due to its heat issues.

Apple uses the same technology as them. If not treated properly, the reactive nature of lithium batteries can cause some serious damage. You definitely do not what to be asleep in case something like that happens.
Again, charging your iPhone Overnight can significantly shorten its Battery Life.

It is recommended that you do not charge your iPhone 100% every time to preserve battery health. But how do you control that if you leave your iPhone overnight every time?

Basically, your iPhone needs just about two hours to fully. If you’re one who sleeps 8 hours a night, it means your iPhone will be overcharging for about 6 hours before you unplug it in the money which will damage your battery health.
