God of War was first made available for the PlayStation 2 on March 22, 2005, in North America. After ten years of serving the Olympian gods, Kratos, a Spartan soldier, is given the mission by Athena to locate Pandora’s box, which holds the secret to stopping Ares, the God of War, from rampaging through Athens.
The “Ghost of Sparta” is revealed to have once been Kratos, a servant of Ares who, after saving the Spartans and his army from certain death in battle, misled him into killing his family.
This forced his transformation into the “Ghost of Sparta.” After killing Ares at last, Kratos eventually locates Pandora’s Box and ascends to Mount Olympus to take over as the new God of War.
