Xbox is a video game franchise that Microsoft founded and owns. Five gaming consoles are part of the company’s product lineup, together with software (games), streaming services, Xbox Network, and a subsidiary named Xbox Game Studios that handles game development. The brand was initially publicized in the US with the November 2001 debut of the original Xbox console.

The original Atari Jaguar was the first video game console offered by an American company; sales of the device ended in 1996. It sold more than 24 million copies by May 2006. Microsoft’s second console, the Xbox 360, debuted in 2005 and had sold 86 million units as of October 2021.

The third system, the Xbox One, debuted in November 2013 and has since sold 51 million units. The fourth generation of Xbox consoles, the Series X and Series S, was unveiled in November 2020. Marc Whitten was succeeded as Xbox CEO by Phil Spencer, who started in that position in late March 2014.

On October 20, 2016, Nintendo Switch was unveiled. The idea for the Switch, which was under development under the codename NX, was Nintendo’s response to many quarters of financial losses in 2014, which were attributed to weak Wii U sales and market competition from mobile games.

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo’s former president, encouraged the business to develop cutting-edge hardware and mobile gaming.

Multiple modes of use on the Nintendo Switch are intended to appeal to a wide range of video game gamers. In order to facilitate programmers’ work on the system and increase compatibility with current game engines, Nintendo chose to use more commonplace technological components, such as a processor based on Nvidia’s Tegra line.
