Players gain experience points for participating in various in-game activities. Players gain experience points as they level up, and various features are gradually unlocked.
At level five, the player can battle at a Pokémon Gym and join one of three colour-coded teams red for Team Valor, blue for Team Mystic, or yellow for Team Instinct that act as factions battling for control of Gyms in the Pokémon Go world.
Niantic announced in June 2017 that the game mechanics of Gyms would be revamped for a more teamwork-oriented experience; Gyms were disabled on June 19, 2017, and new Gyms were released a few days later with the next app update.
Gyms now have a spinnable component to receive in-game items like Potions and Poké Balls.
Furthermore, Gyms are limited to six Pokémon, each of which must be unique to that Gym. Coins are now earned based on how long the defending Pokémon has been in a Gym, rather than a daily gym defender bonus of 10 coins per current defending Pokémon.
