As players move around in real life, their avatars move around on the game map. Different Pokémon species live in different parts of the world; for example, Water-type Pokémon are commonly found near bodies of water.
When a player encounters a Pokémon, he or she has the option of viewing it in AR mode or with a live-rendered, generic background.
If the player flees, the Pokémon will face the location where it was last engaged, with the exception of Nosepass, who will always face north due to its Pokédex entry. AR mode displays an image of a Pokémon as if it were in the real world using the camera and gyroscope on the player’s mobile device.
With or without the AR mode enabled, players can take screenshots of the Pokémon they encounter.
