A soundcard is also known as an audio card. It is both an internal and external expansion card that provides audio signals to and from a computer. This component translates digital audio signals to analogue ones and vice versa.

Normally, the sound is produced under the control of computer programs that can be heard through speakers or headphones.

A sound card is an optional component but very necessary if you want to hear any sound from your computer. The first sound card is considered to be the Gooch Synthetic Woodwind.

It was invented by Sherwin Gooch in 1972 and was used by PLATO terminals.

A sound card can best be appreciated in the following areas:

  • Video conferencing. In the advent of Covid-19, most meetings were scheduled online. Participants have to listen and contribute towards the discussion. Imagine there is no sound card on your computer. Sound cards allowed participants to hear what is being discussed.
