God of War was first released in North America for the PlayStation 2 on March 22, 2005. After ten years of service to the Olympian gods, Spartan soldier Kratos is tasked by Athena with finding Pandora’s box, which holds the key to defeating Ares, the God of War, who is rampaging through Athens.

A series of flashbacks reveal that Kratos was once Ares’ servant, who saved the Spartan and his army in battle but tricked him into killing his family, forcing his transformation into the “Ghost of Sparta.”

Kratos eventually finds Pandora’s Box and kills Ares before ascending to Mount Olympus to become the new God of War.

God of War II was released for the PlayStation 2 in North America on March 13, 2007. Kratos, enraged by his fellow gods, rampages through Rhodes. Kratos is saved by the Titan Gaia after Zeus intervenes and betrays him.

She tells him that he must now seek out the Sisters of Fate, who can change his fate and save him from Zeus’s wrath.

Why is God of War so popular?

Everything in the game is excellent, but nothing feels forced. The game simply has a visceral flow and pace that is reminiscent of an epic adventure. God of War feels and plays like your favourite fantasy/action film while also challenging you.
