David Jaffe at Sony’s Santa Monica Studio created the God of War action-adventure game franchise. It debuted in 2005 on the PlayStation 2 (PS2) video game console and has since become a flagship title for the PlayStation brand, with nine fully fledged games across multiple platforms and a text-based game.

The story follows the titular protagonist, Kratos, a Spartan warrior and later the Greek God of War, who was duped into killing his family by his former master, Ares, the original Greek God of War.

This sets off a chain of events that leads to wars between the various mythological pantheons.

Due to the events of the series’ Greek era, Kratos follows a path of vengeance due to the Olympian gods’ schemes, whereas the Norse era, which introduces his son Atreus as a secondary protagonist, depicts an older Kratos on a path of redemption, which inadvertently brings the two into conflict with the Norse gods and the pair attempting to prevent Mentioning.

The average time to complete the main storyline is 21 to 22 hours if you stick to the main quests and avoid any side content. If you play God of War casually, balancing the story with some side quests, you should be able to finish it in around 30 hours.

Even if you’re going for the platinum, this is the best way to play the game the first time.
