Anytime you enquire about Bungie, a well-known firm, you are likely to receive the response “Halo” from the person you are speaking with. The Bungie name hasn’t been connected to Halo, though, for some time.

Contrary to popular belief, Halo was always a Microsoft property; Bungie simply did not own the entire franchise. Due to the terms of their contract, Bungie was unable to work on any other video game projects, and Microsoft retained ultimate approval authority over all of their productions.

After developing one of the best console launch titles ever and its successors, Bungie’s contract with Microsoft expired in 2007. They decided to end their relationship with Microsoft with the release of “Bungie: The Last Light.”

In 2000, Microsoft purchased Bungie, and their flagship game, Halo, contributed to the success of the Xbox gaming platform. But the developer broke away from Microsoft in 2007, and three years later Halo production came to an end.

The first several Halo games may have been excellent representations of what early 2000s gaming was capable of, but Bungie never truly owned it. They are now prospering with their own intellectual property, which has a sizable number of unique gamers that are fiercely dedicated to it.
