Apple Inc. created and developed Face ID, a facial recognition system, for the iPhone and iPad Pro. In addition to enabling precise facial expression monitoring for Animoji, the system also offers six degrees of freedom (6DOF) head-tracking, eye-tracking, and other functions.

Biometric authentication is permitted for unlocking a device, making payments, accessing sensitive data, and other uses. It was first made available in November 2017 alongside the iPhone X, and it has subsequently been updated and added to all iPad Pro models as well as various new iPhone models.

The Face ID hardware consists of a sensor with three modules: an infrared camera that takes an infrared picture of the user reads the resulting pattern and creates a 3D facial map. The flood illuminator module shines infrared light on the user’s face.

A secure subsystem compares this map with the recorded face, and if the two faces sufficiently match, the user is verified. The technology adjusts to changes in look over time and can distinguish faces with glasses, clothing, cosmetics, and facial hair.

Does Face ID work on twins?

No, because Face ID adds an extra layer of security by allowing just five failed match attempts before requiring a passcode. Given that their distinctive facial features might not have fully grown by the time they are under the age of 13, the statistical probability is different for twins, siblings, and children under the age of 13 who resemble you.
