Gary Burrell and Min Kao founded the American and Swiss multinational technology company Garmin Ltd., previously known as ProNav, in Lenexa, Kansas, with its corporate headquarters in Olathe, Kansas, in 1989. The business is also recognized by its initials, Garmin. Since 2010, the company has been validly incorporated in Schaffhausen, Switzerland.

The company focuses on GPS technology for automobile, aviation, sports, and outdoor use. Because of their developments in wearable technology, they have been in competition with producers of activity trackers and smartwatches for customers like Fitbit and Apple.

While working for the defunct King Radio in 1983, Gary Burrell hired Min H. Kao from the defense contractor Magnavox. In 1989, they established Garmin as “ProNav” in Lenexa, Kansas.

The GPS device that was ProNav’s first offering cost US$2,500. Later, the business was renamed to “Garmin,” a combination of the names of its two founders, Gary Burrell and Min H. Kao. The American Army became their first client in 1991.
