The Face ID hardware consists of a sensor with three modules: an infrared camera that takes an infrared picture of the user reads the resulting pattern and creates a 3D facial map. The flood illuminator module shines infrared light on the user’s face.

A secure subsystem compares this map with the recorded face, and if the two faces sufficiently match, the user is verified. The technology adjusts to changes in look over time and can distinguish faces with glasses, clothing, cosmetics, and facial hair.

A fingerprint is an imprint made by the friction ridges of a human finger. A major method used in forensic science is the collection of fragments of fingerprints from crime scenes. Fingerprints are made by moisture and finger oil left on metal or glass surfaces.

One can make impressions of complete fingerprints by carefully applying ink or other substances from the peaks of friction ridges on the skin to a flat surface, such as paper. Although portions of the lower joint areas of the fingers are frequently recorded on fingerprint cards as well, fingerprint records normally include impressions from the pad on the last joint of fingers and thumbs.
