David Jaffe founded the God of War action-adventure game series at Sony’s Santa Monica Studio. It debuted in 2005 on the PlayStation 2 (PS2) gaming system and has since grown to include nine full-featured games across many platforms, in addition to a text-based game, making it a flagship title for the PlayStation brand.
The tale, which has its roots in ancient mythology, centres on the titular Kratos, a Spartan warrior who eventually became the Greek God of War after being duped by his old boss, the original Greek God of War Ares, into murdering his family.
This starts a chain of events that results in conflicts between the many mythological pantheons. Due to the Olympian gods’ schemes, Kratos pursues vengeance during the Greek period of the series.
However, during the Norse period, which features his son Atreus as a secondary protagonist, an older Kratos pursues redemption. This unintentionally puts the two in conflict with the Norse gods as they attempt to avert Ragnarök.
