The Pokémon Company, a business formed by Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures, manages the Japanese media franchise known as Pokémon, which is short for Pocket Monsters in Japan.
The franchise, which Satoshi Tajiri founded in 1996, is focused on fictitious “Pokémon” animals. Pokémon Trainers are those who capture, educate, look after, and engage in combat with Pokémon. “Gotta Catch ‘Em All!” is the franchise’s English catchphrase. Currently, 905 different Pokémon species exist.
In February 1996, Game Freak and Nintendo produced a set of video games for the original Game Boy portable system called Pocket Monsters: Red and Green (later known outside of Japan as Pokémon Red and Blue).
Pokémon quickly developed into a multi-media franchise that was adapted into many different mediums. The highest-grossing media franchise of all time is reportedly Pokémon.
More than 440 million copies of the Pokémon video game series have been sold, and one billion mobile downloads have made it the third most popular video game franchise of all time.
