Wondering what web hosting is?

Web hosting is simply the activity or business of providing storage space and access for websites. At this point you are getting the primary goal of Plesk.

As far back as 2000, Plesk originated from Canada, Switzerland and headquarters in Toronto. It has a lot of offices around the world, which includes but not limited to Barcelona, Spain, Germany, Japan and the rest.

Plesk’s first hosting automation was initially released and went live in 2001. It was until 2003 that it was sold off to SWSoft which also became Parallels in 2008.

Parallels in March, 2015 decided to renamed the service provided to Odin. In December of 2015, Plesk became a separate business entity.

Interestingly, Plesk has an online university known as Plesk University. It was launched in January 2016. This online university provides full range of courses to assist users learn how to use the products services given by Plesk. The courses and exams are certified and is free.

Here are some few known limitations of Plesk

  • Backups stored in the FTP repository are not displayed in the Backup Manager if Plesk is unable to establish connection to the FTP repository.
  • Websites cannot be restored from Plesk backups if they were renamed after the backup was made.
  • After switching from MSMTP to a different mail server, the Mail tab disappears for all existing subscriptions, removing the ability to enable or manage the mail service. The issue can only be resolved via manipulating the Plesk database.
  • Installing Plesk via an EZ template on a container with an operating system supporting Apache 2.4 results in the php-fpm component being missing. The component can be installed by running the Plesk Installer manually.
  • It is impossible to reassign an IP address from one network interface to another using the plesk bin ipmanage command.
  • On Plesk servers using the IceWarp Merak mail server, the “mailbox size limit” setting is applied on the subscription level, not on the level of individual mailboxes. As a workaround, make sure that you set the limit sufficiently high.
  • Even if remote database access is enabled for a database user in Plesk, remote access is impossible if the database server only listens on the localhost IP address.
  • Enabling the Plesk Firewall extension blocks passive FTP unless the ip_conntrack_ftp module is loaded or the necessary exceptions for the ports used by passive FTP are configured manually.
  • After removing a custom PHP handler in Plesk, you can re-assign all domains that used it to use a different handler quickly and conveniently using the plesk bin repair utility.
  • PHP shipped with Plesk now comes with support for opcode cache modules out of the box.
