Users could share six-second looping video clips on the American short-form video hosting site Vine. Founded in June 2012, it was acquired by the American microblogging service Twitter in October 2012, and on January 24, 2013, it had its public debut.

Vine’s social network allows users to post videos, which may then be shared on other social media sites like Facebook and Twitter.

The Vine app was also used to explore videos, along with a collection of videos organized by theme, with the hopes that users would discover videos that would “trend.” Vine faced competition from other social media platforms like Instagram and Pheed.

As of December 2015, Vine had more than 200 million active users. Twitter announced on October 27, 2016, that all uploads will be prohibited, however viewing and downloading would still be possible.

On January 20, 2017, Twitter made all of its Vine videos ever uploaded available online. The archive was formally shut down in April 2019. As of 2022, the service was shut down and put into an “archival state.”
