A client access license (CAL) is a type of license that binds the licensee to a set of user terms that restrict how the organization’s services are used. This is typically accomplished through the use of software accompanied by an authenticity certificate and a multi-digit license key.

Prior to downloading the software, the end user must validate their CAL by transposing the license key numbers into a designated field.

Microsoft is just one company that uses CALs to ensure proper system and application usage. Whether multiple CALs are required or single CALs are used is primarily determined by whether a product is used for personal or business purposes.

CALs may be assigned to more than one person for business use, but multiple users may not use the software at the same time. Device CALs, which can be applied to all devices or computers connected to a shared server, are generally beneficial to larger organizations.
