The Japanese media franchise known as Pokémon, which is short for Pocket Monsters in Japan, is managed by The Pokémon Company, a company established by Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures.

The franchise was started by Satoshi Tajiri in 1996 and is centred around fictional “Pokémon” creatures. The people who collect, raise, care for, and use Pokémon in battle are known as Trainers.

The English catchphrase for the franchise is “Gotta Catch ‘Em All!” There are currently 905 distinct Pokémon species.

Pocket Monsters: Red and Green, a pair of video games created by Game Freak and released by Nintendo in February 1996 for the original Game Boy handheld device, served as the franchise’s launchpad. Red and Green were later released outside of Japan as Pokémon Red and Blue.

Pokémon quickly developed into a multi-media franchise with numerous media adaptations.

What planet is Pokémon on?

The Earth-like planet that the Pokémon franchise is set on—possibly a version of Earth in a parallel universe—is known as Pokémon World. Pokémon coexist on this planet with humans in a human-animal partnership.
