Mavis Beacon is a computer-based application software designed to help users acquire typing skills. The application was initially released in 1987 by The Software Toolworks authored by Norm Worthington, Walt Bilofsky and Mike Duffy.

The earlier version was made available in MS-DOS and has ever since been modified to fit the Microsoft Windows and Mac OS. The application is made available in three languages (English, French, Spanish).

The name Mavis Beacon was put together by The Software ToolWorks, the Mavis was derived from the lead vocalist of the Staple Singers; Miss Mavis Staples whiles the Beacon stands for a guideway.

Mavis Beacon software is made up of several steps by step tests to help monitor the user’s speed and typing skills. Among these test is a couple of typing games to keep the user entertained and at the same time improves the typing skills.

This application is one of the most widely used to teach and improve individuals’ typing skills.
