Did Nintendo make PlayStation?

In 1991, Sony announced that they were working on a brand-new project with Nintendo, a super NES compatible CD-based system dubbed: The PlayStation. It was set to be a hit that would propel Sony into the video game market right next to Nintendo, not as a competitor but as an ally.

Then something happened.

If you open up a Super Nintendo, you’ll find a sound FX chip called the SPC 700, which was created by Sony.

Sony on the discovery that they have the capacity to develop their own game console at the time was not ready to start from the ground so they decided to create the CD-based system that could supplement the SNES.

In 1988, Sony began developing a CD-based add-on to the Super Nintendo.

The two companies got along very well in the early stage of the project. 100 or prototypes were made and tested and their future together seemed very certain. The problem arouses when Sony wanted to control the licensing for the CD version of games produced for the Super Nintendo’s disc format.

Nintendo was not ready to let that happen so they went on to partner with Philips for the creation of the CD-based add-ons.

After Sony noticed that the only way they were going to ever make it on the Video game market was to create their own consoles.

They continued with the creation of the PlayStation without Nintendo. Sony designed the PlayStation and the subsequent releases independent of Nintendo.

Did Nintendo make PlayStation?

Nintendo might have been in the creation of the PlayStation if they had not betrayed Sony in their idea to come together to create the PlayStation.

Nintendo simply has no hand in the genius behind the creation of the PlayStation. They deserve no applause for it either.
