Actually, Sega and Nintendo have a great relationship but Sega is not owned by Nintendo. Meanwhile, it bears mentioning that Nintendo has rights to many of Sega’s games.

Let’s talk more about the relationship between Sega and Nintendo.

Does Nintendo own Sega?

The masterminds behind the creation of Sega are Martin Bromley and Richard Steward, they created the company. It was founded back in 1960 on the 3rd of June.

The company was originally called Nihon Goraku Bussan before it was later changed to Sega Int. In its early stages, Nintendo was its biggest competitor in the market when Sega was bought by Gulf and Western Industries in 1969.

After the purchase was when the company started to develop video game consoles, starting with the SG-100 and the Master System.

After Sega released their Sonic the Hedgehog, they took over the market and became a target that Nintendo wanted to eliminate.

During its big failure in the US, Sega Saturn, 32X and the Dreamcast console failed, Sega stopped manufacturing consoles and decided to become a third-party developer and publisher.

Then came the Sammy Corporation which acquired Sega. It was during Sega’s down times that Nintendo came in to make deals with them that secured the present-day relationship between Sega and Nintendo.

Therefore, Nintendo never actually bought Sega.
