How does Apple Watch know when you sleep?

Apple watches come with built-in sensors that are used to keep track of the individual’s fitness and sleep. The electrical heart sensor (EKG) and the Accelerometer components of the device come into play when the device wants to detect when the person sleeps.

The EKG is used by the device to monitor the heart rate. The accelerometer on the other hand detects if the person is in motion.

With this, if the person’s heart rate falls around 60 bpm and there is motion recorded, the watch registers the person as sleeping. Even though this may not always be an accurate measure, it has been seen to mostly reflect a true result.
