Body mass index(BMI) is the number used by health professional to determine whether a person is overweight, healthy weight or underweight. It helps in measuring the amount of fat in a person`s body through the use of height and weight. Body mass index correlates with the risk of developing certain health condition such as hypertension, stroke, diabetes, cardiovascular disease etc. Health professions most of the time rely on a person`s body mass index in giving them medical advice and also evaluating their risk of been diagnosed with a certain condition.

Withings scale is a smart weight scale that automatically identify who is using it based on the weight data entered during setup. This device is a product of Withings Corporation, a company that specializes in the design and manufacture of smart devices that assess and keep track of user’s health. This smart scale does not only measure users weight but also track users ECG (Electrocardiogram) in case of an emerging heart attack, nerve activities and segmental body composition.

This smart scale measures body fat (BMI) using the Bioelectric impedance analysis(BIA). This works by delivering small dose of electric through the user which measures impedance this in turn helps in estimating the total body water. With the use of the total body water, the scale can measure the body`s lean mass. The lean mass subtracted from the user’s body weight will provide the measure for body fat.
