Who sold more Nintendo or PlayStation?

The history of these two great companies started long time ago. On September 23, 1889, as other countries like London was trying to find Jack the Ripper, Fuso Jiro, Yamauchi started developing playing cards, setting in motion the company that is know known as Nintendo.

Then in 1946, came along Sony. The company was then struggling to come up in the gaming industry. Sony was then experts in the Compact Disc development.

They had a vision to collaborate with the already leaders, Nintendo to integrate their efforts so as to promote both their interests in the market. Sony wanted to develop a CD drive system to add to the Nintendo’s gaming consoles.

They called the project PlayStation.

As time went by they had worked together to come out with operational prototypes of the PlayStation. Just then, Nintendo, Swayed Sony over as they decided they can not work together. Sony went on to develop the PlayStation 1 on its own.

The two companies competed for the market and have since them been in competition with each other. We will discuss the market statistic of units sold for these two companies in this article.

Who sold more Nintendo or PlayStation?

As at 1998, PlayStations had already taken the lead in the market. Nintendo was able to catch up with the gap left behind by Sony’s PlayStations soon but that didn’t last long.

Statistics from a late 2021 analysis revealed that Sony was able to sell up to 568,831,895 units of their device from when the company started. Nintendo on the other hand was able to sell 795,002,212 units of their devices.

This analysis is based on their full sales from the start of their companies therefore putting Nintendo at an advantage here.

However when we take the statistics from the same year Sony joined the market, PlayStations have outsold Nintendo by a far margin.
