Mavis Beacon is the name of computer-based application software, designed to assist users develop and improving their typing skills. The application was initially released in 1987 by The Software Toolworks authored by Norm Worthington, Walt Bilofsky and Mike Duffy.
During the launch, the software was made available only on MS-DOS before it was later revised to operate on both the Microsoft Windows and Mac OS.
The Mavis Beacon application is considered to be the most widely used typing assistant as it is equipped with a lot of speed tests and games to keep the user involved and entertained in the learning process.
Why is it called Mavis Beacon?
The name Mavis Beacon was put together by Les Crane and others at The Software Toolworks. The Mavis was derived from the lead vocalist of the Staple Singers; Miss Mavis Staples whiles the Beacon stands for a guideway.
Mavis Beacon is not entirely the name of a real person it was crafted. However, the original photo on the application belongs to that of a Haitian model called Renee L`Esperance.
